1998-2002 Chevrolet Cavalier Cold Air Intake System Part Number 21-447

5:27 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
The AEM Cold Air System is the result of extensive development on a wide variety of cars. Each system is engineered for the particular application. The AEM Cold Air System differs from all others in several ways. We take the inlet air from outside of the engine compartment where the inlet air is considerably cooler than the hot under hood air. The cooler inlet air temperature translates to more power during the combustion process because cool air is denser than warm air. AEM has conducted extensive inlet air temperature studies and we have seen temperature reductions of up to 50 degrees by pulling air from outside of the engine compartment. The air mass flow to the engine is increased because of the increased airflow and reduced inlet temperature, which translates to more power.

2003-2007 Nissan Murano Engine Air Intake Duct Service Bulletin

Nissan is conducting a voluntary safety recall on model year 2003 – 2007 Murano vehicles. Under certain conditions, the intake duct, which is connected to the intermediate resonator in the air intake system of the engine, may separate from the resonator with engine movement. This could cause minor idle fluctuation or poor acceleration. If this occurs, and the vehicle continues to be driven without being serviced, the engine may stall while driving. To remedy this potential condition, Nissan is conducting this voluntary safety recall campaign to replace the air intake duct with an updated part and the air duct clamps with new clamps at no charge for parts or labor.

1994-1999 Dodge Ram Pick-Up Tubular Exhaust System

8:31 PM by onesecond · 0 comments
TUBULAR EXHAUST SYSTEM: These components are designed as a system to improve the exhaust efficiency of the Dodge 5.2L & 5.9L V8 engine. They are constructed of 409 HP stainless steel to better withstand the high heat present with the fuel-injected engine, especially when used for towing or other heavy duty applications. The stainless steel used for these systems is much more durable than mild steel, although it does not appear different in appearance. These systems can be identified by the part numbers on each of the major components. Note that a magnet will stick to this type of stainless steel; magnetic attraction is not a valid test for these systems. A performance gain can be expected by the installation of the system. This system does require welding for installation (see note below) and retains all O.E.M. emissions equipment.

Cracked Turbo Hose Fix (ADAP09) FAQ for 2002-2007 Dodge Sprinter

3:00 PM by onesecond · 0 comments
What is the cracked turbo hose Fix ?
A. The cracked turbo hose fix, our ADAP06 is a billet aluminum adaptor that replaces the metal end on the intake side turbo hose found on the driver’s side on the 2.7 liter, 5 cyl. In-line Mercedes Benz turbo diesel engine found in 2002 up to2007 Dodge Sprinter Vans. Our Hose adapter has a nicely rounded end which resists hose cracking even in high temperatures, high vibration and high boost pressures. The Sprinter chassis is becoming increasingly popular with RVers and commercial users because of its great fuel economy and driver-friendly characteristics. However, the intake turbo hose with its flawed metal ends is causing the Sprinter chassis to suffer an inordinate amount of breakdowns.

In most cases we have found that these additional leafs (Dodge - 4 leafs, Chev. - 3 leafs and Ford - 2 leafs), in addition to an in-cab controlled airbag system, will be adequate in most cases. The use of an airbag system has always proven to be far more effective than additional helper/overload springs.

Dodge TXT Exchange Program Datasheet

The TXT’s legendary durability comes from classic engineering—ductile and cast iron housings to absorb overloads, helical gears for smooth torque transmission and double-lip spring load seals to contain lubrication. No shortcuts. No cheating on quality, material and reliablity factors.
Like any rotating asset that’s driven hard, TXTs eventually wear out. These reducers operate in harsh conditions with airborne contaminants and there’s typically no time for preventive maintenance. Seals tend to go first, leaking oil. Once they fail, then bearings, gears and hubs follow.

Many service specifications have listed a housing bore diameter .002˝ smaller than it should be.

Miata NB Oil Pressure Sender Replacement

The Mazda Miata is a very well balanced car and a good value on a per-smile basis, but the one thing that has bothered me since I bought the car is the fake oil pressure gauge. In a brilliant move which must save $0.50 per car, Mazda replaced the original Miata's oil pressure sender which was a real analog gauge with a nice digital idiot light type unit. To keep the gauge from looking odd with the needle pinned, they install the gauge needle so that it sits in the normal range when there is any amount of oil pressure in the engine. So there is two states to the gauge, "normal" where you have pressure, and "dead" where the gauge and your engine are both "dead". As has been stated elsewhere, this is the worst of all possible solutions. An idiot light would most likely catch your eye rather quickly. But this gauge which never moves is easily forgotten and when the needle does move, chances are it won't be noticed.

Audi Climate Control LCD Rebuild Kit

10:21 PM by onesecond · 0 comments
Please read and become familiar with these instructions before performing the actual repair. The LCD panel is fragile and can be damaged if incorrectly installed. Installation is very simple and straightforward. Many color photos are included to ensure a trouble free installation. Place several paper towels on your work surface so as not to scratch the buttons on your climate control panel.
1) Remove controller from the center console
Gently pry wood trim fascia panel (A) from center console using a flat edge tool. A flathead screwdriver with an overlay of electrical tape will prevent any marring of surfaces. Remove the two Phillips head screws on left and right sides (B). Climate control center will slide out. Remove all four electrical connectors by simply pushing the tab in with your thumb and pulling the connector away from its socket. All four connectors are mechanically different to prevent mismatch upon assembly.
2) Taking your controller apart
Remove the three Phillips head screws from holding the front control panel to the controller housing. In this photo two screws can be seen at the top. The 3rd is on the bottom side. If you do not have the four turquoise lamp holders as seen in this photo, your controller is LED backlit. Rebuild is the same, but you will not need the lamps provided in this kit. If your controller is an early version with a white enclosure, please go to the appendix for updated information. Gently pull the front panel away from the housing to expose the LCD controller board and its ribbon connector.

Audi A6 C5 4.2L V8 5V BAS Secondary Air Injection Maintenance

The secondary air system is designed to enable catalytic converter to heat up and reach its operating temperature more quickly after a cold start.
Principle of operation
Due to extra mixture enrichment during cold-start phase, an increased amount of unburnt hydrocarbons is carried in exhaust gas. The secondary air system improves the afterburning (oxidation) process in the catalytic converter, and in this way reduces toxic emissions. Heat generated by oxidation accelerates "light off" of catalytic converter and significantly improves exhaust gas quality during warm-up.

Dirito Brothers' Dealerships Step up to Support Nissan 350Z T2 Race Program

If you’ve been following this column, you’ll remember a very flattering article last month about the Mitsubishi EVO VIII MR, with an evaluation of its potential for racing action with the SCCA. Well, we’ve taken a step further into this racing discussion, and – this time – we got hooked. Last February, we began a discussion with Don Dirito of Dirito Brothers Nissan, VW, and Saab in Walnut Creek and Concord about the possibility of racing a Track model 350Z with support from their dealership. While we have a very high degree of respect for the EVO, when it comes to racing, there is just something about a traditional, normally aspirated, rear wheel drive two-seater sports car. And this appeal grew as we did more homework and discovered that the 350Z had shown well in the SCCA national racing program. Don Dirito was not familiar with SCCA racing.

Land Rover Perkins Prima Engine Conversion

TDi and N/A engines have some fundamental differences, mechanical as well as fueling. The major mechanical ones being compression ratio and piston cooling. The injection pump is tuned to suit the type of engine and expected use, so I would expect an engine from a car to be set up with the flexibility required. There are ancillary differences between engines, the most obvious being different water and oil pumps on van engines. Sumps from cars have smaller capacity than vans. TDi engines have a different breather system with two hoses to the sump.

Land Rover LR3 Vehicle Enhancement Program

6:16 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
Land Rover is conducting a vehicle enhancement program on LR3 and Range Rover Sport vehicles. At elevated temperatures the spring return force on the air suspension compressor exhaust valve is insufficient to overcome the friction forces, which can lead to the exhaust valve not closing properly. This results in a leak path in the air suspension system and result in an 'Air Suspension fault' message. LR3 and Range Rover Sport vehicles will also have an air suspension warning lamp illuminated. Other vehicle and software enhancements will be performed as part of this combined Service Action.

Rebuilding a Series Starter Motor

6:08 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
Before you begin on your quest of rebuilding your starter motor, the first thing you should do is check all your grounds, and leads. These should be clean and well connected. A good way to have your grounds wired is a large cable from the battery’s negative post to the frame, and another large cable from the frame to a starter mounting bolt. The positive lead goes from the battery to the starter button, then from the starter button to the positive terminal on the end of the starter motor.

Range Rover 4.0/4.6 (P38) Coil Conversion

6:03 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
The second generation Range Rover 1995-2001 P38 came with an electronic air suspension (EAS) system and solid axles. The EAS system works wonderfully when functioning correctly, but can be a liability when problems occur, especially if on the trail. I wanted to completely eliminate the EAS system and at the same time lift the P38 so that it would perform better off-road. The first step is to install an EAS to spring conversion kit and two companies offer them for the P38, Atlantic British and Motorcarsltd. Both kits basically provide you with new upper and lower coil spring seats where the air springs once were mounted.

1994 Land Rover Timing Belt Replacement Intervals

The information relating to timing belt replacement intervals is additional to the main purpose of this CD, but is included to provide guidance to garages and for customer advice. Where possible the recommended intervals have been compiled from vehicle manufacturers' information. In a few instances no recommendation has been made by the manufacturer and the decision to replace the belt must be made from the evidence of a thorough examination of the condition of the existing belt.

2007 Freelander 2 SE Rear Screen Connectivity Aftermarket Install Guide

I have just finished fitting the rear screen connectivity system to my car. I was going to do a photo album of the install, unfortunately the camera died after the second photo. Instead I have used pics from the installation instructions and workshop manual to help illustrate.
Typical Land Rover, the instructions that came with the kit where pictorial only, and not as clear as they could have been (in my humble opinion). I hope this installation guide will be a lot easier to follow and hopefully you won’t have the few problems I encountered.

Air Condition Installation in a LBC

5:47 PM by onesecond · 0 comments
By: Gerald Medford. Why would anyone want to install an air conditioning system in a LBC? My answer would have to be…. The challenge of taking an aftermarket product and installing it into an LBC to make it look like a factory installed option and to make my co-pilot more comfortable. My co-pilots comfort probably has more to do with it than anything. After all guys that’s what we are here for isn’t it? I guess that could be debatable but life is so much better when they are happy. Oh Yea! When they are happy everybody is happy. Why did LBC’s not have air installed at the factory? Well, from what I hear there was not much of a demand for air over in Brit country. Something about the cool damp weather over there. They did add air to some of the cars back in the 70’s. The compressors were about as big as a four cylinder engine. Now the units are much smaller and more compact.

Based on data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (formerly known as the Fatal Accident Reporting System), over 1,800 people were killed in fire crashes involving these trucks from 1973 through 2000. (Attachment A is a list of fatal C/K fire crashes by state since 1993.) This is more than twenty times as many fatalities as in the infamous Ford Pinto. Despite a voluntary recall request from the NHTSA in April 1993 (Attachment B) and an initial defect determination by Transportation Secretary Federico Pena in October 1994 (Attachment C), GM stubbornly refused to initiate a recall.

Chrysler Transaxle A-404/413/415/470 Introduction

12:13 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
These transaxles combine a torque converter, fully automatic 3 speed transmission, final drive gearing and differential into a compact front-wheel-drive system. The unit is basically a "Metric" design. The identification markings and usage of the transaxle are charted in Diagnosis and Tests. Transaxle operation requirements are different for each vehicle and engine combination and some internal parts will be different to provide for this. Therefore, when replacing parts, refer to the seven digit part number stamped on rear of the transmission oil pan flange.
Within this transaxle, there are 3 primary areas:
(1) Main centerline plus valve body (similar to conventional TorqueFlite).
(2) Transfer shaft centerline (includes governor and parking sprag).
(3) Differential centerline.
Center distances between the main rotating parts in these 3 areas are held precisely to maintain a low noise level through smooth accurate mesh of the gears connecting the centerlines.
The torque converter, transaxle area, and differential are housed in an integral aluminum die casting.
NOTE: The differential oil sump is separate from the "transaxle sump."
Special emphasis is placed on filling and maintaining the differential oil level—to Va inch to 3/e inch below the fill hole in the differential cover.
The torque converter is attached to the crankshaft through a flexible driving plate. Cooling of the converter is accomplished by circulating the transaxle fluid through an oil-to-water type cooler, located in the radiator side tank. The torque converter assembly is a sealed unit which cannot be disassembled. The transaxle fluid is filtered by an internal "Dacron Type" filter attached to the lower side of the valve body assembly.
Engine torque is transmitted to the torque converter then, through the input shaft to the multiple disc clutches in the transaxle. The power flow depends on the application of the clutches and bands. Refer to "Elements in Use Chart" in Diagnosis and Tests section.

GM Anti Theft System Usage

When diagnosing a no start condition these days, it's always a good idea to consider if the vehicle has a theft deterrent system that could be the cause. There's nothing more frustrating than chasing, say, a no crank, or a start and stall, only to find that the system is "only doing its job"! On many older vehicles, you can only check with the owner to see what, if any, after-market " alarm" may have been added. Car companies have increasingly made their own systems available either as options or standard equipment.

Raising Vehicle
Raise front of the vehicle by using a 4 post lift or drive-on ramps. Securely block the rear wheels of the vehicle. Do not remove the front wheels during installation. It is imperative that the vehicle is at ride height for this installation.
Install Frame Mounts
First step is to install the frame mounts. The mounts utilize existing rivet holes in the frame. You will need to air chisel the rivets as shown below. Once the holes are clear, grab the 3/8” x 1.5” hex bolts & washers from the “front” hardware bag and insert them into the rivet holes facing down. Position the mounting bracket to the frame rail and begin fastening the 3/8” bolts with the provided washers and nylock nuts. Do not tighten all the way! Grab the 3/8” x 1.25” hex bolts and drop them into the mount holes on the bracket itself. Don’t forget to use washers. You can now fully tighten the frame bolts at this time.

Cooling System V8 Datsun Z

1:08 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
A common problem with the V8 Datsun Z is overheating. In general, overheat due to insufficient air flow through the radiator, due to inefficient radiator designs. Some radiator designs restrict the air flow through the radiator. For example, a 4-row radiator is so thick, that an electric cooling fan cannot easily move air through a 4-row radiator. A 4-row radiator normally requires an engine-driven fan to draw air through the radiator.

The car will have to be on jack stands or a hoist to be able to get in and under the car. Remove all of the rear suspension, shocks, rear brake lines, fuel tank and fuel lines. There will be a lot of cutting and grinding sparks. Remove the rear seat, floor and trunk carpeting and the deck lid. Our car had Dynamat installed, it is a great insulation and sound deadener but dreadful to remove and even worse to weld near. Remove as much of the undercoating from inside wheel wells and around the tub area in the trunk to facilitate marking, cutting and welding.

Installing & OEM Integration Bluetooth to the Car, and Beyond

9:54 PM by onesecond · 0 comments
This cool technology gives us some neat gadgets to install, such as Parrot’s CK3100 hands-free kit. Better get up- to-speed on Bluetooth’s new uses, because it’s moving into new products every year.
Bluetooth, once thought to be relegated only to expensive earpieces owned by the techno-savvy, has expanded. You may see a guy in the airport pull out and unfold a tiny keyboard, then take out a small mouse and switch it on. The funny thing is, there’ll be no computer in sight. Instead, he’ll prop up his PDA, hit a few buttons, and without making any connections or worrying about line-of-sight, he’ll simply start working. Every component will be functioning over a Bluetooth connection. But even in its most common application—cellular hands-free devices—the technology has grown, and if you are in the business of installing Bluetooth-equipped hands-free car kits, this is something your customers need to know.

a) Access the stock Engine Control Unit (ECU). The location of the ECU on both the Eclipse and Lancer is behind the glove compartment mounted vertically on the firewall.

Some factory ECU’s use a bolt to retain the factory connectors, and it must be removed before the harness can be disconnected. There may be more than one connector, and they must all be removed without damage to work properly with the AEM ECU. Do not cut any of the wires in the factory wiring harness to remove them.

2000-2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Adjustable Coilover Kit

Spring height adjustment:
This coilover kit is designed to allow both race-ride and street-ride heights. It is not recommended to run race-ride height for normal street driving. This will result in more tire wear due to the excessive negative camber, which creates more stress on the wheel hubs and ball joints.
With the vehicle jacked up and secured on jack stands, raise (clockwise) or lower (counter clockwise) the aluminum perches with the supplied spanner wrenches to the desired height. Depending on which way turned, securely tighten the other perch against it. Lower the vehicle to check ride height. This processed may need to be repeated until the desired ride height is achieved. Camber and toe settings will change depending on the height adjustments. A wheel alignment is recommended after complete installation.

Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI-IX Intercooler Waterspray System

9:02 PM by onesecond · 0 comments
The Mitsubishi EVO is a fantastic car – originally conceived and designed with motor sport in mind, there are lots of smaller features built into the car in standard trim that are designed to assist Ralliart for competitive use in Group N rallying etc. The later model VII-IX’s are no exception, and one of the most often misunderstood features is the Intercooler Water Spray system.
However, like many things fitted to homoglated or road going versions of cars used in motor sport applications, the factory setup is very conservative. But this just leaves lots of room for improvement for owners looking to optimize the performance of their car – and we are more than happy to assist.

Mitsubishi Lancer ES Complete Report Manual

9:01 PM by onesecond · 0 comments
With all the hype over the Evolution VIII, the Lancer Ralliart, introduced in 2004, has been overlooked as a sporty little competitor against Sentras and Imprezas. The Ralliart, named after Mitsubishi's motorsports arm, boasts the following: a 162-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder with variable valve timing; shift linkage borrowed from the Lancer Evolution; four-wheel disc brakes with ABS; bucket seats from the Japanese-market Lancer Evo GT-A; a sport-tuned suspension; and 16-inch wheels. The base ES and O-Z Racing edition continue with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that pumps out 120 hp. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on all models, and a four-speed automatic is optional. For 2005, a Rally package including a scuff plate and exhaust tip is offered. The O-Z Racing edition gets restyled 15-inch alloys, while the mid-level LS has been eliminated from the lineup.
