Combined WAVE-VECTIS simulation of an intake manifold of V6 PFI gasoline engine

This paper describes the analysis of the flow in the intake manifold of a V6 gasoline engine performed using WAVE 1D engine cycle simulation program alone first, and then using WAVE coupled with 3D CFD VECTIS. The work shows how modeling in 3D selected components of the inlet manifold embedded within the 1D flow network leads to improvements in prediction accuracy.
The main purpose of this work was to improve the WAVE model of the V6 3.2l engine, scheduled for installation in the GTA version of the popular Alfa Romeo 156 vehicle. Moreover, this work was also part of a comparative study between two intake manifolds differing in shape and volume.

Timing Belts For All

3:13 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
Timing belts are truly a new-age item. Slow advances in rubber technology prevented timing belts from being reliable enough to mass produce. It wasn’t until 1950 that the Germans used a reinforced rubber belt to operate the synchronization of the camshaft and the crankshaft. The vehicle was the German Goggomobile.
Soon after, many other European car-makers began experimenting with synchronous timing belts. Fiat and Vauxhall were among the first, followed by the General Motors Pontiac Division. The first mass produced vehicle with a timing belt to hit the American highways was the 1966 Pontiac Tempest.

Toyota Prius Conversion to Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Technology

1:07 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
A Hymotion plug-in charged from grid electricity of the average national blend results in a 70% or greater reduction in CO2 emissions compared to a traditional gas-powered vehicle.
If the L5 battery is charged from electricity generated entirely by coal-fired power plants, there is still a net CO2 emissions reduction of at least 50%.
As our national blend of electricity generation progresses towards greener generation sources, such as solar and wind, the environmental benefits of Hymotion plug-in hybrids will continue to grow.
The L5 battery is also environmentally friendly and recyclable, containing no heavy metals or toxic chemicals.

In Japan and European versions of the Toyota Prius the vehicle is sold with an EV Button pre-installed by Toyota. For some reason, in the North American version this button is left off (note: speculation focuses on possible EPA/NHTSB regulations that were unclear as to whether the option to use 2 different 'fuels' was legal. Also it has been speculated that the decision came from Toyota, but no clear statement, at this writing, has come from Toyota. The EV button MAY become a dealer option or as a standard feature on future model year Priuses).

Toyota Prius Hatch Automatic Petrol/Electric Hybrid Road Test Report

3:24 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
Toyota was beaten by Honda in the race to get a hybrid vehicle on to the Australian market, however the enforced delay (brought about by Design Rule and tax concession issues) has brought benefits for buyers. The Prius now on sale here for $39,990 is the latest model that is currently on sale in Japan.
The Toyota Prius made its debut in Japan as the world’s first production hybrid vehicle back in 1996 and more than 60,000 have since been sold around the world. These early cars formed the basis for testing in Australia and were also used as evaluation vehicles by some State Governments and fleet operators.

Thermal Evaluation of Toyota Prius Battery Pack

2:49 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
The Toyota Prius is a five-passenger compact sedan powered by a 52 kW gasoline engine and a 33 kW electric motor. It has a curb weight of 1254 kg. The Prius has a complex dual-mode hybrid configuration in which energy to and from the vehicle wheels can travel along several different pathways. Mechanical energy to the wheels passes through a planetary gear set that couples to the engine, electric motor, generator, and to the final drive. Power to the wheels can be provided solely by a (273.6 Volt Nickel Metal Hydride [NiMH]) battery pack through the electric motor, directly from the gasoline engine, or from a combination of both the motor and the engine. The battery pack can be recharged directly by energy from the wheels powering the motor (regenerative braking) or from excess energy from the gasoline engine – which turns the generator.

2010 Toyota Prius Overview

2:45 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
Improvements to the third-generation Prius required the filing of more than 1,000 patent applications. Several concern the powertrain, which is 90% new and with an increase in engine displacement to 1.8 litres from 1.5 litres. The platform is all new, but apart from a 1.5-cm gain in overall length, the Prius is practically the same size as before, and it remains a four-door hatchback.

Toyota Prius Hybrid Electric Vehicle Performance Characterization Report

2:43 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Field Operations Program evaluates advanced technology vehicles in real-world applications and environments. Advanced technology vehicles include pure electric, hybrid electric, hydrogen, and other vehicles that use emerging technologies such as fuel cells. Information generated by the Program is targeted to fleet managers and others considering the deployment of advanced technology vehicles. As part of the above activities, the Field Operations Program has initiated the testing of the Toyota Prius hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), a technology increasingly being considered for use in fleet applications. This report describes the Pomona Loop testing of the Prius, providing not only initial operational and performance information, but also a better understanding of HEV testing issues. The Pomona Loop testing includes both Urban and Freeway drive cycles, each conducted at four operating scenarios that mix minimum and maximum payloads with different auxiliary (e.g., lights, air conditioning) load levels. The five passenger Prius is powered by a 70-hp, 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a 44-hp electric motor. The Prius also has a 274-volt nickel metal-hydride battery comprising 228 1.2-volt cells.
The Prius exhibited test results of 35.7 to 55.6 miles per gallon (mpg) during the four types of Urban Loop testing; the EPA estimate for city driving is 52 mpg. During the four types of Freeway Loop testing, the Prius got 40.0 to 45.4 mpg; the EPA estimate for highway driving is 45 mpg. Even though the EPA tests are conducted on a dynamometer and the Pomona Loop tests are conducted as on-road driving tests, when tested with a minimum payload and no auxiliary loads, the mpg test results are the same for the Freeway Loop testing and the EPA highway testing. Under the same operating scenario, the Urban Loop results are 3.6 mpg higher than the EPA estimate for city driving.

How-To BMW Paralever Pivot Maintenance & Upgrade

2:51 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
Rubber Chicken Racing Garage's JL Paralever bushing kit is cheap insurance against more costly repairs due to the failure of the OEM Paralever bearings in 1988-2004 BMWs. Honda Moly 60 Paste and Loctite #270 threadlocker are must haves when installing the kit.
As classic 1988-2004 Paralever-equipped BMWs continue to age gracefully while performing their duties, owners should think carefully about preventive maintenance before the need for expensive repairs erupts. Arguably the most common failure of the famed Paralever design involves the pivot bearings where the final drive attaches to the rear of the swingarm.

2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo

12:26 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
The 2010 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo is a precursor to a redesigned 5 Series lineup, both in style and engineering. The design features a more upright version of the signature BMW twin-kidney grille and shapelier flanks thanks to a more pronounced character line running the length of the car from the headlights to the taillights and an indentation along the bottom of the doors, just above the rocker panels. Unlike other 5 Series models, the GT has frameless windows and a coupe-like hatchback body style. The car is based on a version of the 7 Series architecture that will also host the rest of the redesigned 5 Series lineup.

The Prius Effect: Learning from Toyota

7:32 PM by onesecond · 0 comments
Will Ferrell’s comment is representative of statements that are voiced at cocktail parties, in family gatherings, and around office water coolers across America, wherever Prius owners are present. Prius owners extol the virtues of their automobiles at length, to anyone who will listen. They post on automotive message boards, write letters to the editor, urge their friends to test-drive and buy.
Each driver defines the vehicle’s merits slightly differently, but all of them use their experiences with the Prius—in an industry that has symbolized American culture since Ford’s Model T—to tell a personal story that incorporates the values of environmental sustainability.

TOYOTA GUIDE TO TOWING

7:22 PM by onesecond · 0 comments
Towing Trailers Carrying ATVs, Snowmobiles and Motorcycles Trail-riding, be it on snowmobiles, ATVs or motorcycles, is a group sport. In determining your towing needs, you might want to make room to accommodate friends and their toys. That means planning to carry more weight than the sum of all your toys and gear—and maybe getting the Sequoia or CrewMax Tundra rather than the DoubleCab.
You have to get the truck and trailer hooked up. Backing the truck and aligning the ball with the hitch coupler takes two people, ideally, but with enough practice or with Toyota’s optional back-up camera and video display, you can do it by yourself.

Toyota Corolla Matrix Complete Report Manual

Formerly called the Matrix, Toyota has renamed this tall, stylish wagon the Corolla Matrix. It uses well-proven Corolla components, including the drivetrain and platform, but it differs most from the Corolla by having an optional all-wheel- drive system with automatic slip sensing and torque redistribution, a system available only with the 123-horsepower base engine. The optional 170-hp engine makes the front-wheel-drive Corolla Matrix more sporty, but the AWD model could benefit from a bigger motor. Split folding rear seatbacks (the right-rear and front-passenger seatbacks fold forward to handle long items) add to this wagon's practicality. The Corolla Matrix is well designed and flawlessly built. For 2005: There are modest cosmetic and interior changes, stability control is optional on base and XR models, and curtain airbags are optional.

The wiring diagrams and technical service bulletins, containing wiring diagram changes, are obtained from the domestic and import manufacturers. These are checked for accuracy and are all redrawn into a consistent format for easy use. All diagrams are arranged with the front of the vehicle at the left side of the first page and the rear of the vehicle at the right side of the last page. Accessories are shown near the end of the diagram. Components are shown in their approximate location on the vehicle. Due to the constantly increasing number of components on vehicles today, it is impossible to show exact locations. In the past, when cars were simpler, diagrams were simpler. All components were connected by wires, and diagrams seldom exceeded 4 pages in length. Today some wiring diagrams require more than 16 pages. It would be impractical to expect a service technician to trace a wire from page 1 across every page to page 16.

Upgrading 1966 Ford MUstang In Total Control

12:16 AM by onesecond · 0 comments
If you have been following the progression on our Project Street Fighter ‘66 Mustang, you know we’re building this pony to be a corner carver that’s competitive with late-model sports cars. We’re giving it an old-school Trans-Am style with modern performance goodies under its skin. This Mustang isn’t meant to be a smooth fairgrounds cruiser, but a built-tough race car that’s legal for the street. Last month, we installed Total Control Products four-ba coilover rear suspension using a Chassisworks FAB9 rearend. The installation went surprisingly well, and it involved converting the original leaf-spring 8-inch Ford rearend to a tubular control arm, coilover 9-inch. There was some welding involved, but it was ridiculously easy. The front suspension went in just as smoothly. We’ve all heard the phrase “bolt-in” or “direct-fit,” but we’ve grown weary from past experience of putting too much faith in those words. So far, the suspension assemblies from TCP, a Chassisworks company, adhere to their promise of easy installation.

AIM has developed special applications for many of the most common ECUs: by special applications we mean user-friendly systems which allow to easily connect your ECU to our hi-tech data loggers: user need only to install harness between the logger and the ECU. Once connected, the logger displays (and/or records, depending on the logger) values like RPM, engine load, throttle position (TPS), air and water temperatures, battery voltage, speed, gear, lambda value (air/fuel ratio), analog channels etc… All AIM loggers include – free of charge – Race Studio 2 software, a powerful tool to configure the system and analyze recorded data on your PC.

FORD MUSTANG COBRA 4.6-Litre V8 Manual Convertible Road Test Report

11:45 PM by onesecond · 0 comments
Ford’s cult car of the sixties, the legendary Mustang, has been reincarnated to head-up Ford’s Australian performance car image, with a different slant to Holden’s two door offering.
The all-new American muscle car has been Australianised by Tickford Engineering in process that not only converts it to right hand drive, but also incorporates some good old Aussie ingenuity and engineering to improve the ergonomics, ride/handling and finesse of the final product.
Although slotted into a sport’s car category, the Mustang is almost in a class of its own with most of this type being smaller in size and engine capacity, or with a much higher price tag. No doubt Ford’s latest offering will draw a cult following and have an attraction for the performance oriented driver.

The 1975 Volvo 240 Series - Two and four door sedans. And a station wagon. They represent Volvo's greatest investment in new features and modifications to enhance safety, strength, durability and economy. And quality. The innovation in their design is represented by their new product designation: Volvo 240 Series. We haven't changed the designation completely, however, because this new generation still contains the best of Volvo's well known features such as: the steel safety cage surrounding the passenger area, the energy absorbing front and rear ends, the triangle-split dual braking system, the thorough rust-proofing (even better this year), the safer fuel tank location, the reliable B20 engine.
