Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground lead. Remove underbelly panel. See UNDERBELLY PANEL . Remove right front wheel and splash shield. On left side, remove engine acoustic cover. See ENGINE ACOUSTIC COVER . Remove 3 bolts securing left rear timing belt cover and remove cover. See Fig. 7 .
2. On vehicles up to 2003, remove intake manifold chamber to gain access to right rear timing belt cover. See INTAKE MANIFOLD CHAMBER . On all vehicles, remove 2 bolts securing right rear timing belt cover heat shield and remove heat shield. See Fig. 7 . Remove 3 bolts securing right rear timing belt cover and remove cover.
CAUTION: DO NOT use camshaft gear bolts or timing belt to rotate crankshaft. DO NOT use arrow on oil pump body as a timing reference.
3. Using a socket on crankshaft pulley bolt, rotate crankshaft in a clockwise direction. Align the engine SAFE position notch on crankshaft pulley with the ARROW on front mounting plate and timing marks aligned on the rear camshaft gears.
CAUTION: Ensure hole immediately adjacent to side of lower crankcase is used.
4. Insert timing pin LRT-12-232 through hole in lower crankcase, ensuring pin is located in hole in drive plate. See Fig. 9 .
CAUTION: DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshafts while rear timing belt is removed.
5. Remove and discard front exhaust camshaft cap seal from cylinder head. See Fig. 15 . Position LRT-12- 175 to rear camshaft gears. See Fig. 30 . Remove and discard bolts securing gears to camshafts. Remove rear camshaft gears, timing belt and special tool as an assembly.
CAUTION: DO NOT rotate crankshaft or camshafts with timing belt removed and cylinder heads installed.
6. If camshaft timing belt is to be reinstalled, mark direction of rotation on timing belt. Remove LRT-12-175 from camshaft gears and remove timing belt from gears.
Installation
NOTE: Following front or rear timing belt installation, it is possible that after rotating engine and positioning crankshaft pulley to the SAFE position, timing marks on rear timing gears may be misaligned. This misalignment is acceptable provided that timing belt reinstalling procedure was carried out correctly.
CAUTION: If sintered gears have been subjected to prolonged oil contamination, they must be soaked in a solvent bath and then thoroughly washed in clean solvent before reinstalling. Because of the porous construction of sintered material, oil impregnated in gears will emerge and contaminate belt.
1. Clean camshaft gears and mating faces on camshafts. Place gears inverted on a flat surface, with the locating lugs on the gears facing each other. See Fig. 31 .
2. Keeping timing marks aligned, position timing belt onto gears. Position LRT-12-195 between gears, turn center nut sufficiently to spread drive belt. Invert gears and timing belt and position LRT-12-175 to camshaft gears.

Source
3. Check that locating lugs are still aligned and remove LRT-12-195 from between camshaft gears. Install LRT-12-198 alignment pins into end of each camshaft. See Fig. 33 . Position timing belt and gears over LRT-12-198 and locate gears onto camshafts.
