2007 Mercedes Car Development by Dummies

2007 Mercedes Car Development by Dummies
Climate control experts from DaimlerChrysler haven’t been particularly nice to Dr. Oscar. Recently, for example, they raised his temperature significantly by pointing a heater at his head for half an hour. On another occasion, it looked like they were trying to put Dr. Oscar into deep-freeze hibernation by exposing him to a temperature of minus 20 degrees Celsius. Dr. Oscar is a tough customer, though - and he doesn’t hold any grudges about the tortures he’s been put through. He always remains calm and cool - which isn’t surprising, given that Dr. Oscar is a test dummy. Still, he’s anything but stupid, and he’s also remarkably sensitive (see box „Dr. Oscar’s inner values“).

Dr. Oscar, who also goes by the more serious name of ambient climate measurement dummy, is the faithful servant of a passenger car development team headed by Florian Kauf. Dr. Oscar’s 118 sensors provide the engineers with a precise overview of temperature distribution and airflows in a vehicle’s occupant cell. Climate measurement tests performed with Dr. Oscar deliver clear results rather than soft assessments such as “maybe it’s a little too cold,” or “I think there might be a draft coming from somewhere.”
