2008 FORD ESCAPE HYBRID 4X4 Road Test

12:23 AM by onesecond ·
Like all the other Escape models, this year’s hybrid gets several changes
inside and out, including new bodylines, a revised suspension, improved
noise suppression, electric-assist power steering, a new instrument panel
and more standard safety features. The hybrid is offered in either front-drive
or all-wheel drive versions.
Interior and cargo area
Access is easy both to the front and back, but with the (useless) step bars,
getting out can be perilous. It’s hard not to get dirty or to trip on them, and
the vehicle is not high enough to warrant them. Fortunately, they’re an
option. The front seats prove very comfortable. Drivers are entitled to a very
good driving position but not to adjustable lumber support. As there are no
rain gutters, opening the doors can release a shower of water or snow on the
seats and occupants. The emergency brake pedal is too close to its release
control, which complicates use.
The rear bench seat provides good comfort for two adults, with generous
head, leg and foot room. The cushion and seatback fold in 60/40 sections.
The head restraints must be stowed under the front seats when the cushions
are raised and the seatbacks folded. We’ve seen better ways of disposing of
head restraints.
Access to the spacious cargo area is obtained by lifting the rear hatch
window or the entire door. Though the spare lodges under the floor, the sill
is not too high.
