2004 Audi A4 1.8T (5-Spd.) An all-new car, codenamed E90 arrives, with an aluminum-intensive rear-drive chassis. Enlarged to match A4/C-class dimensions as 1-series comes in to fill entry-level niche, the car will also offer electrohydraulic brakes, Active front steering. 3.6-liter V-8 268-hp in top 335 or 336 model, M3 to get more power. Sedan and wagon body styles will wear 3-series nomenclature, while the coupe and convertible are spun off as 4-series models.

Two years ago Audi performed a major makeover on the A4, already one of our favorite sedans. We liked the second-generation version just as much, especially the new-for-2004 S4 - a performance package built around a 340-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 - which impressed us enough to earn a spot on our 10Best list. The V-8 adds further substance to an extensive choice of powertrains that includes Audi's 170-hp, four-cylinder 1.8T engine (which meets ULEV standards) and a 220-hp, 3.0-liter V-6. There are also four gearboxes, either standard or optional, ranging from a five-speed manual to a five-speed Tiptronic automatic. In between are a six-speed manual and Audi's smooth, continuously variable transmission (CVT). The latter is standard on the cabriolet and front-drive V-6 sedan, optional on the front-drive 1.8T. Also new for 2004: All A4s are wired for satellite radio.
