Installation - Steps 1-3
1. Turn the ignition on and open the roof completely. Then start closing the roof and stop when the rear lid is fully open (vertical position). This enables access to the area marked (2). IMPORTANT: Turn off the ignition and remove key before continuing! Remove rear seat bench (lift up front portion with force), then remove T-30 torx screw (1).
2. Remove rear side panel: First pull towards the center of the car (1) then lift up and slide up and frontward out. Simultaneously pull the back rest up (where the torx screw was removed earlier). The side panel is just snapped into place and can be lifted off along the rubber edge (2). Directly behind the panel is the roof controller box.
3. First remove plugs (1) and (2) from the controller box (they are secured with push-in tabs), then remove some of the electrical tape (3) around the wires on the black plug. One of the wire taps will have to be attached here later.
Installation - Steps 4-6
4. Remove the red cap from the Audi plug as shown. Push the safety latch up, then slide the black inside out of the red cap. Install this red cap onto the similar looking (female) plug on the supplied smartTOP T-Harness.
5. Connect the (female) Audi plug with the other (male) connector on the T-Harness. IMPORTANT AND INTENDED: The markings on the plugs are as shown. Contact no. 1 meets receptacle no. 10 and vice versa. Just make sure that on both plugs the row "1-10" is facing up before connecting. This is due to the fact that we use the original factory plastic part which was never intended to carry male pins and hence has the numbers printed "mirrored" in this application case.
6. Attach the +12V wire tap directly to the THICK RED-GREY (on A3 and TT) or RED-PURPLE (on A4) wire leading to the second controller plug. Connect the GROUND wire tap to one of the THICK BROWN wires nearby that are going directly to a chassis grounding bolt. On the A4 the thick brown wire on the controller plug may be used if there is no bolt close by. Now connect the SmartTOP module to the harness, then insert the plugs back into the controller and turn the ignition on. The LED on the SmartTOP module must show a constant blinking pattern. See paragraph about InstallAID LED. Last, put everything back together in the reverse order of removal. Done.
