The BMW 1 Series remains a unique proposition today. Building on this winning platform, the revised five-door BMW 1 Series went on sale in March 2007 with the three-door following in May. It features the same class-leading dynamics as before but mated to a raft of technological innovations born from BMW’s EfficientDynamics programme. EfficientDynamics offers solutions to the seemingly diametric goals of increased power and performance, yet improved economy and emissions.
Now offered in both three- and five-door guises, the BMW 1 Series range is powered by engines offering increases in output by up to 20hp. At the same time emissions have been cut by up to 21 per cent and fuel consumption by up to 24 per cent. For example, the revised BMW 118d posts the lowest ever CO2 emissions of any mainstream BMW car recording 123g/km. Only the recently announced production version of the dual-fuel BMW Hydrogen 7 can better this emissions figure and that is only when it is running in the hydrogen mode. The technologies showcased in the record breaking 118d, BMW’s most economical car ever with a 60.1mpg figure, are included on nearly all of the 1 Series range from April, 2007.
Tim Abbott, BMW UK sales director, said: “The launch of a revised 1 Series with its new, EfficientDynamics-inspired, drivetrain will see the 1 Series maintain a market leading position in terms of performance, economy and emissions. It’s a bold claim but one which is backed up with figures. The average 12,000 mile-a-year driver of a new 1 Series can expect to save up to £250 off his fuel bill compared to the outgoing model. Business users are similarly better off by more than £500 with a reduction in company car tax courtesy of lower CO2 emissions. All this in a vehicle with higher engine output and better performance figures.
