55-57 Chevrolet Disc Brake Conversion Installation Instructions

1. Remove stock front brake drums, brakes and backing plates. Clean and inspect spindle for cracks. scouring and/or damage. Be sure to thoroughly clean out the 5'f8"-I8 threaded hole at the top of the spindle.--This is extremely important—Use a non-oil based cleaner such as tri-chlorethylene. Clean out the threads with a" bottoming tap if _ necessary, but clean it good.
2. Fit roller bearings to spindle. Make sure it they slide all the way on. Inner bearing must slide freely to back of spindle. If binding detected or scouring from previous bearing failure is evident sand with 240 grit emery paper (or equivalent) and a, rotary sanding motion on the spindle. This operation "must be continued until the inner bearing can be slid on to the spindle without binding. DO NOT TRY’ GRINDING OR FILING Tl-IE‘ SPINDLE. It only takes a few minutes with emery paper. If either bearing fits loosely on spindle because of previous frozen failed bearings, replace spindle.
3. Once the bearings have been fitted to the spindle, take the small support bracket (see illustration) and installation the outer face of the spindle in the two lower holes. Install the two 7/I6-20 Gr8 Hex Head bolts through the bracket, then spindle, then the steering arm. Install the Locknuts supplied with the kit and tighten. -
4. Take the appropriate caliper bracket (Right side or Left Side as marked on the bracket) and install it as per the illustration, and as follows: Install the I/2“-20 x 2 17%“ bolt to the support bracket from the outside then through‘ the spacer provided then through the caliper bracket. Due to variation in different rotors it may be necessary to add I thin, shim to the spacer- (This is to adjust bracket to accommodate caliper initial fit on to rotor.) Generally on domestic rotors add one shim. On foreign rotors you should not need the shim. Install the I/2" locknut provided but do not fully tighten yet, just snug it up.
5. Take the special 5/8" x I“ bolt supplied and install it through the upper hole in the caliper bracket into the large hole in the top of the spindle. Do not tighten yet, just snug itzup
